Grain storage silos are commercial or industrial structures that are used for long duration grain storage or as a feeder for mills. To maximize the grain’s storage life, many staples and grain processing companies choose to store their grains in silos. As a result, silos are great way to ensure an uninterrupted availability of the grain at a reasonable cost during lean supply. Modern grain storage silos also provide initial grain processing functions such as pre-cleaning, drying, aerating, and fumigating the grain. This enhances the shelf life of the product and reduces damages. Most modern silos are usually made of coated metal sheets and we provide the following types of silos-

Types of grain storage silos

Flat bottom silos

These type of grain storage silos are constructed with a flat bottom surface and are designed by advanced technology. They can be used for all types of grain storage and are the recommended for storage capacities between 750MT to 12500 MT but higher capacities are also possible. The walls are constructed with coated corrugated steel sheets which ensures durability. 

Flat grain storage silos are suitable for a wide variety of agricultural products. They are usually used with a conveying and pre-cleaning system. The corrugated panels are assembled cylindrically on circular purlins and vertical stiffeners with bolts and nuts on the heavy rings with strong civil foundations.

The design of the silos is done after a thorough analysis of the seismic and wind loads of the area where the silos are to be installed. Here are some of the components of the flat bottom silo-
 
  • Roof – Usually the roof is manufactured with a 30 degree incline which gives it high strength and stiffness.
  • Cylindrical Body – The body is made of coated corrugated sheets of different specifications based on various factors such as location, capacity, wind loads, seismic activity, land area availability etc.
  • Wind rings – They are provided to prevent any deformation in the structure that can be caused by wind pressure
  • Roof steps / ladder – They are provided to facilitate movement for inspection
  • Roof inspection door –  To allow inspection of the grain condition
  • Fumigation and aeration system – To enhance the shelf life of the grain, fumigation system is installed to kill the insects and stop the deterioration of the grain
  • Temperature monitoring system – This system gives insights about the temperature of the grain so that proactive action can be taken to stop deterioration of the grain

Hopper bottom silos

Hopper bottom grain storage silos are generally built with a conical bottom which is made of steel plates. They are quite versatile and are suitable for grain processing plants, feed plants, poultry farms etc. These are the preferred silos for capacities between 30 MT and 750 MT. The walls are constructed with coated corrugated steel which ensures durability. 

These silos are designed for unloading processes through the action of gravity and they are erected on a supporting structure. The standard angle is 45 degrees but others such as 50, 55 and 60 are also used as per requirement.

  • Supporting structure – This supports the main body of the silo and is made of steel

  • Wind rings – They are provided to prevent any deformation in the structure that can be caused by wind pressure
  • Roof steps / ladder – They are provided to facilitate movement for inspection
  • Roof inspection door –  To allow inspection of the grain condition
  • Fumigation and aeration system – To enhance the shelf life of the grain, fumigation system is installed to kill the insects and stop the deterioration of the grain
